Growing Threat

Global Terrorism on the Rise

Terrorism has been on the rise since the September 11 2001 coordinated terrorist attacks on New York City's World Trade Center. This attack dramatically changed the security landscape and transformed efforts by governments to address the threat of terrorism.

Since then, terrorism has become a constant presence in modern life. While governments around the world have invested tremendous effort in eradicating terrorist groups, the threat has not diminished.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is the latest manifestation of this threat. The threat from ISIS lies not only in its ability to direct terror attacks, but also in the effectiveness of its propaganda in attracting and radicalising individuals.

Globally, this has led to a number of ISIS-directed or inspired attacks:

Singapore is not immune

Singapore is a target for ISIS. We are part of the global anti-ISIS coalition, and have been identified in ISIS publications as a legitimate target. Individuals have been arrested in Batam for plotting a rocket attack on Marina Bay.

The threat is not just from outside our country, but also from within. Some Singaporeans have been radicalised by ISIS, including a handful who have gone to Syria to fight. We have also detained others who were prepared to conduct attacks here or contribute to the radicalisation of more individuals.

In the face of this threat, we cannot remain complacent. Government's response alone is not enough. Every member of the community must do their part to keep Singapore safe and secure.

Stay Alert. Stay United. Stay Strong
"It is about what each of us can do as an individual, it is about how each of us can play our part, to protect ourselves, and to protect those around us."
